Authorities are searching for a gang of 12 armed robbers who carried out a cash-in-transit heist on KwaMashu Highway on Monday night.
The suspects, traveling in two vehicles, ambushed a cash van, opening fire before blowing it up at Duffs and KwaMashu Cross Roads. The gang made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and disarmed the security officers.
According to KZN VIP’s Gareth Naidoo, the robbers also fired shots at motorists and metro officials responding to a nearby crash. Fortunately, no bystanders were injured.
“KZN VIP medics attended to three security officers who sustained injuries from the explosion. The roadway had to be closed,” Naidoo said.
Law enforcement agencies have launched an extensive manhunt for the suspects, urging anyone with information to come forward.
