A four-year-old boy from Cape Town is in critical condition after being mauled by a pit bull in Macassar. C’Jay Nel was visiting a family friend when the dog attacked him, breaking his ribs and causing severe lung injuries.

His devastated family is demanding that the dog's owner be jailed.

C’Jay has been in intensive care at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital for two weeks. His grandmother, Anna-Maria August, recounted the heartbreaking moment she learned of the attack.

“I was at work with my daughters, including C’Jay’s mother. When I got home, police officials were there, telling me there had been an accident,” she said.

Doctors had to insert breathing tubes due to the extent of his injuries.

The household where the attack took place expressed shock and apologized to the Nel family.

Meanwhile, Western Cape police have launched an investigation. Once concluded, a report will be sent to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to determine whether charges will be laid. So far, no arrests have been made.

The incident has reignited concerns over pit bull ownership and public safety, with calls for stricter regulations on dangerous dog breeds.
