Environment Minister Dion George has approved exemptions for eight of Eskom’s coal-fired power stations, allowing them to continue operating under strict conditions.
Duvha and Matla will run until their planned closures in 2034, while Kendal, Lethabo, Majuba, Medupi, Matimba, and Tutuka have been granted exemptions for five years, expiring in 2030.
The decision aims to balance environmental concerns with energy stability during Eskom’s transition to renewable energy. As part of the conditions, Eskom must deploy air quality monitoring stations, a mobile app for pollution alerts, and an environmental health specialist within months. Additional measures include community health screenings, mobile clinics, and more real-time emissions data.
Minister George emphasized the urgency of Eskom’s shift to renewable energy, stating that delays in transmission and independent power production must end.
