Limpopo police have initiated a widespread search for a 58-year-old teacher accused of repeatedly raping a 13-year-old student at a local primary school.
According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, the alleged abuse occurred multiple times between November 2024 and March 7, 2025. The victim was brought to her mother by another teacher, who reported the incidents on Thursday.
"Preliminary investigation reveals that the 13-year-old female learner was allegedly raped several times," Thakeng stated. "The suspect fled in his vehicle, claiming he was going to the police station. When contacted, he claimed to be in Hammanskraal, Pretoria, and then switched off his phone."
Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has issued a directive for maximum resources to be deployed in apprehending the suspect. "This educator, who allegedly raped the female learner, must be tracked down and apprehended to face the full might of the law," Hadebe emphasized. "Children are supposed to be nurtured and given the necessary care by those entrusted with this responsibility, such as educators, guardians, and parents alike. No child is supposed to be subjected to such inhumane acts."
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the suspect's whereabouts to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Martin Thema, Crime Stop, or use the My SAPS App.
This case follows a national outcry regarding the rape of a 7-year-old child at Bergview College in the Eastern Cape, prompting Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and the SAPS to assure the public of their commitment to handling the investigation with urgency. Civil organizations, including Not In My Name International and the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Youth League, have also publicly condemned the incident.
