A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, triggering widespread devastation and panic across the region. The tremor, recorded at around noon local time (06:00 GMT), has been followed by at least four significant aftershocks, ranging between 4.5 and 6.6 in magnitude.

Casualties and Damage

Authorities have not yet confirmed an official death toll, but a rescue worker in Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, told the BBC that the destruction is "enormous" and casualties are "at least in the hundreds." The Red Cross has also reported "significant damage."

A state of emergency has been declared in six regions, with images showing collapsed bridges, damaged roads, and ruined buildings.

Impact Beyond Myanmar

The earthquake was felt in neighboring countries, including Thailand, where it caused an unfinished high-rise to collapse in Bangkok, killing at least three construction workers and injuring dozens. Thai authorities report that 81 workers are still missing, and rescue operations are underway.

Videos from Thailand also show buildings swaying, with a rooftop pool dramatically overflowing as the tremors rocked the city.

Challenges in Gathering Information

Myanmar remains under military rule following a 2021 coup, making access to reliable information difficult. However, rescue teams and international organizations are working to assess the full extent of the damage and assist survivors.

As the situation develops, emergency teams continue to search for victims while aftershocks pose an ongoing threat. Authorities urge residents in affected areas to remain vigilant.
