The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has raised concerns over a growing number of respiratory diphtheria cases in South Africa, with 40 confirmed cases, including nine fatalities.

Diphtheria is a serious and highly contagious illness that can be prevented through vaccination. Symptoms typically include a sore throat, fever, and swollen neck glands.

Dr. Jocelyn Moyes, a medical epidemiologist at the NICD, emphasized the importance of early treatment for those showing symptoms. “If anyone experiences these symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical care immediately,” she urged. “Diphtheria is treatable, but if people delay seeking treatment, the effectiveness of the anti-toxin medication and antibiotics can be reduced.”

The NICD is urging parents and the public to ensure that children’s vaccinations are up to date, as this is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of this potentially life-threatening disease.
