As schools close for the first term on Friday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is urging holidaymakers to exercise caution along the coast. A new moon spring tide is expected to peak on Saturday, bringing stronger tidal flows that could heighten the risk of rip currents.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon warned that the most dangerous conditions are likely in the late afternoon during the first few days of the holiday period.
"There is an increased risk of strong rip currents at beaches," Lambinon said. "Above all, remember that alcohol and water don't mix, and children must always be supervised when they are in or near the water."
The effects of the spring tide will persist for several days, he added, advising beachgoers to carefully plan their coastal activities to avoid unnecessary risks.
