The Mitchell Park Zoo in Durban Central has been temporarily closed for repairs following concerns over deteriorating conditions.

eThekwini Municipality confirmed the closure, citing unsafe playground equipment and exposed concrete surfaces, worsened by recent flooding, as the main reasons for the shutdown.

The decision comes after local resident Ben Trovato raised alarm on social media about the zoo’s poor state, describing abandoned, dilapidated enclosures and a cordoned-off playground. He claimed the only animals he saw were two rabbits, a frail alpaca, and a few tortoises, questioning how the R16 entrance fee was being used.

Despite concerns, the municipality insists that the 100-year-old facility houses over 700 animals, which are cared for daily by a dedicated team. During the renovations, most animals will remain on-site, while birds will be relocated to Umgeni Bird Park.
