The investigating officer in the Joshlin Smith kidnapping and human trafficking case is set to continue testifying today in the Western Cape High Court, which is currently sitting in Saldanha Bay.

Captain Wesley Lombard has been presenting evidence for the State in the trial of Kelly Smith, Jacquen “Boeta” Appollis, and Steveno van Rhyn.

During his testimony, Lombard revealed that negative publicity on social media had hindered the investigation, as community members were reluctant to cooperate. He added that some people followed officers and live-streamed their activities, making it difficult to search for the missing girl.

“Most of the community members who spoke that day didn’t realize the danger they could be putting Joshlin in,” Lombard told the court. “At that stage, there was no evidence that she was dead—our priority was to find her alive.”

Allegations of a Prostitution Ring

Lombard further testified that Joshlin’s mother, Kelly Smith, was allegedly involved in a prostitution ring in Saldanha Bay. He said investigators interviewed local sex workers to determine whether such activities could have led to the child’s disappearance. While they found no direct link, witnesses confirmed Smith’s involvement in prostitution.

The trial continues today as the court hears further evidence.
