The Western Cape Government has expressed its support for measures introduced by the National Department of Health to ensure the continued availability of HIV/AIDS services and treatment.

This comes in response to the 90-day suspension of certain foreign aid funding by former U.S. President Donald Trump. To mitigate potential disruptions, the government has introduced initiatives such as a six-month supply of antiretroviral treatment (ARVs) and a 28-day grace period for late collections.

Western Cape Health and Wellness MEC Mireille Wenger emphasized the importance of these measures in alleviating pressure on both healthcare facilities and patients.

"The funding received from the U.S. and PEPFAR has been critical in our fight against HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Without urgent intervention, we risk losing the progress we have made. A comprehensive and sustainable budget is necessary to bridge the gap and ensure that South Africa continues its efforts in combating these diseases," said Wenger.

The provincial government is calling for long-term financial solutions to safeguard HIV/AIDS and TB treatment programs amid the funding challenges.
