Three teenagers were hospitalized following a violent altercation at Centenary Secondary School in Durban on Tuesday morning.
Shortly after 9 a.m., the school issued a letter to parents announcing the suspension of lessons for the day and urging them to collect their children. Classes are set to resume as normal on Wednesday.
The incident is believed to have been triggered by a racial dispute, prompting security teams and police officers to intervene and restore order.
Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson on Education, Sakhile Mngadi, condemned the violence and called for a thorough investigation. "At this stage, there is no certainty about what transpired. We have engaged the MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal and are calling for a district task team to investigate and report back to the portfolio committee," he said.
Mngadi stressed the need to assess how weapons entered the school, review existing security measures, and implement preventative interventions. He also urged authorities to provide trauma counselling for affected students, emphasizing that "violence in schools cannot be normalised."
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
