The father of slain Umhlanga businessman Shailen Singh has praised the prosecution team following a court ruling denying bail to one of the two brothers accused of his murder.

On Monday, the Durban Magistrate’s Court ordered that Ferrel Govender remain in custody until the case resumes in May. His younger brother, Darren Govender, was granted bail of R200,000 under strict conditions.

Singh, 32, was shot and killed in a parking lot on Meridian Drive in December. His father, Pradeep Singh, expressed his approval of the court’s decision while acknowledging the irreplaceable loss his family has suffered.

"We respect the court’s decision and commend the investigating officer, his team, the prosecutors, and the magistrate. The outcome was fair, but no amount of jail time will bring back a son to his parents, a husband to his wife, or a father to his child," he said.

Singh described his son as a man with big aspirations, adding that the family’s only hope now is that justice is served.
