A 44-year-old man is set to appear in court later this month on charges related to insurance fraud after allegedly impersonating his deceased brother to claim a funeral policy payout.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, is accused of taking out a R100,000 funeral policy under his brother’s name. Officials say two months later, the brother was shot and killed at his home in Mtubatuba.

According to Sibu Ncane, spokesperson for the KZN Hawks, the suspect attempted to file a fraudulent claim after his brother's death. "It is alleged that the suspect then called 1Life Insurance again, using the same phone number, to make a claim for R100,000," said Ncane.

The insurance company grew suspicious of the claim and reported it to the police, prompting an investigation. The case, initially opened at Durban North police station, was transferred to the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit. The estimated potential loss to the insurance company is R200,000.

The man now faces serious charges related to the alleged fraud and will appear in court later this month.
