The family of 16-year-old Retshegofetse Sennelo, a Krugersdorp High School learner who passed away on Saturday following injuries sustained during a cricket match, says they are devastated and searching for answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Sennelo died in hospital after colliding with another player during a match at Christian Brothers’ College in Boksburg, Gauteng. Initially, his family was informed that he had suffered a head injury, but further medical examinations revealed a more severe internal injury.

Family spokesperson Joe Mabuela explained that doctors first suspected a brain injury due to the reported head collision. However, a scan later revealed internal bleeding and a ruptured liver, which left the family in shock.

The family is now awaiting postmortem results to gain clarity on what led to the tragic loss. Despite their immense grief, they hope to honor Sennelo’s life with dignity, remembering him as an intellectual and remarkable young man whose life should be celebrated.

Krugersdorp High School will hold a memorial service on Thursday, with his funeral set for Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Gauteng Department of Education has assured that support is being provided to all affected parties, including the family, teammates, and the school community.
