Durban businessman Ferrel Govender has been denied bail, while his brother, Darren Govender, has been granted bail in connection with the murder of Umhlanga businessman Shailen Singh. The ruling was delivered by Magistrate Kevin Broughton in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday at noon.
The Govender brothers were arrested on January 1, 2025, following the fatal shooting of Singh on December 29, 2024. The 32-year-old was gunned down in a parking lot on Meridian Drive, Umhlanga, just minutes after telling his family he would be home soon. Singh’s vehicle was riddled with bullets, and he died at the scene.
In denying Ferrel Govender’s bail application, Magistrate Broughton ruled that he failed to provide exceptional circumstances to justify his release. The State had opposed bail for both brothers, arguing that they posed a risk of interfering with witnesses and evading trial.
According to the State, Singh was allegedly murdered over an affair with Ferrel’s girlfriend. Prosecutors claim that CCTV footage placed both brothers at the scene, while cellphone records indicate communication between Ferrel and Singh shortly before the shooting.
This is a developing story.
