The high-profile murder case of Shailen Singh has taken a dramatic turn, with explosive revelations and growing public attention. Ferrel and Darren Govender, the brothers accused of murdering Singh, appeared in court on January 12 for their ongoing bail application. The case has sparked protests, fuelled allegations of a love triangle, and revealed troubling details about the motive behind the crime.

Shailen Singh, 32, the owner of logistics company Shail Trans, was tragically shot and killed on December 29, 2024, in the parking lot of Meridian Drive in uMhlanga. Singh was sitting in his white Toyota Hilux around 12:05 p.m. when he was shot multiple times. Just prior to the attack, Singh had spoken to his wife, telling her he was on his way to purchase tyres and would be back shortly.

On New Year's Day, Ferrel, 40, and Darren, 35, handed themselves in to police after being informed by their lawyer of the investigation. They were arrested and charged with Singh’s murder.

The Govender brothers made their first court appearance on January 3, 2025, with an identity parade held on January 8. The bail hearings began on January 12, attracting significant protests outside the court from supporters of the brothers. Despite the public show of support for the accused, Singh's family, including his father and wife, have attended each session.

The brothers, who deny the charges, are facing a premeditated murder case. They are challenging a schedule six application, which places the burden of proof on them to show exceptional circumstances for bail.

Ferrel, a businessman with a large workforce, argued that his business would collapse without his involvement, and his family relies on him for financial support. He vowed not to flee and expressed a desire to clear his name. Darren, also a businessman, denies being complicit in the crime, though he has prior convictions for drunk driving and drug possession.

The State presented a strong case, revealing that the murder was allegedly motivated by an affair—Singh had been dating Ferrel's girlfriend. Police further disclosed that Singh had been previously threatened by Ferrel. CCTV footage placed both brothers at the scene, and several witnesses, fearing for their safety, opposed the brothers’ bail.

The State presented compelling evidence, including photos and video footage, suggesting that Ferrel had assaulted his girlfriend, who has since sought a protection order. The prosecution argued that if Darren were granted bail, he might assist his brother in committing further crimes, potentially aiding in their attempts to evade trial, intimidate witnesses, and destroy evidence.

Additionally, the State contended that releasing the accused on bail would pose a significant threat to public safety and the safety of certain individuals. Investigations revealed that Ferrel fired the fatal shots while Darren observed. Following the murder, the brothers are said to have gone to Ferrel's home, where they shared a meal together.
