A 36-year-old alleged hitman has been arrested in connection with the murder of police Sergeant Ntombi Mbanjwa in Umzimkhulu. The suspect was apprehended in Mpolweni, near Pietermaritzburg, on Wednesday and is set to appear in court on Friday alongside Sergeant Ntokozo Mngqithi.
Mngqithi, who was arrested in November, is accused of orchestrating the killing of his fiancée, Sergeant Mbanjwa, who was shot while home alone in April last year. Both officers were stationed at the Umzimkhulu police station.
Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo confirmed the arrest, stating that Mngqithi allegedly hired the hitman to carry out the murder. He added that further arrests are expected as investigations continue.
