An alleged affair has been identified as a possible motive in the murder of Durban businessman Shailen Singh. This was revealed during the bail application for murder suspects Ferrel and Darren Govender at the Durban Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The brothers are accused of orchestrating Singh’s fatal shooting in Umhlanga in December last year. According to the State, Singh had been romantically involved with Ferrel Govender’s girlfriend, leading to alleged threats against him and his family. Singh’s father confirmed receiving multiple threatening calls warning of violence.

Investigators have linked the accused to the crime scene through phone records showing calls made moments before Singh’s murder. The prosecution argued that Ferrel Govender used these calls to lure Singh to the location, where he was fatally shot, with Darren allegedly assisting in the crime.

A witness at the scene has identified Ferrel as the shooter. The State further presented photos and footage allegedly showing Ferrel assaulting his girlfriend, who has since sought a protection order against him.

Opposing bail, the prosecution argued that releasing the accused would pose a risk to public safety, as Darren might help his brother commit further crimes. They also warned that both men could attempt to evade trial, intimidate witnesses, or destroy evidence.

The court will rule on their bail application in due course.
