Two suspects arrested in connection with a mass shooting in Pienaar Township are scheduled to appear in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga today. One suspect appeared yesterday at the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court in Mbombela.
During a press briefing at the provincial police headquarters, Acting Provincial Commissioner Major-General Zeph Mkhwanazi confirmed the arrest of a suspect who was found in possession of three illegal firearms. However, the firearms were found without ammunition. Investigations are ongoing to determine why the firearms were unloaded.
"The suspect was arrested with three firearms, but there were no ammunition in those firearms," Mkhwanazi said. "Detectives are working diligently to understand the circumstances surrounding the missing ammunition."
The two suspects due to appear in court today face charges of murder and attempted murder related to the mass shooting. The arrested suspect who appeared yesterday is expected to face further charges in connection with the murder at a later hearing. Authorities continue to investigate the case.
