Janusz Walus, the man responsible for the 1993 assassination of former South African Communist Party (SACP) leader Chris Hani, will be deported to Poland, South African government officials announced today.
In a media briefing held outside Hani’s home in Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni, Ministers from Justice, Home Affairs, Correctional Services, and the Presidency confirmed the decision. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni stated, “Since Janusz Walus no longer holds any South African enabling documents, the Department of Home Affairs will be responsible for his deportation.”
Ntshavheni added that Walus will be formally handed over by the National Commissioner of Correctional Services to the Department of Home Affairs, with the process overseen by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) following a Cabinet meeting earlier this week. The move marks the end of Walus' lengthy imprisonment in South Africa.
