The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is set to host a media briefing in Durban today to unveil its plans leading up to its first anniversary. December marks a year since the party was launched by former President Jacob Zuma, introducing a new player to South Africa's political arena.
Rising Influence in KwaZulu-Natal
Despite being a newcomer, the MK Party made a strong debut in the May 29th general elections, securing the majority of votes in KwaZulu-Natal. However, a Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) was formed among the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and National Freedom Party (NFP), sidelining the MK Party from provincial leadership. At the national level, the party holds 58 parliamentary seats.
Notable Political Figures Join Ranks
The MK Party has attracted several high-profile politicians over the past months. ANC veteran Willies Mchunu and former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Busisiwe Mkhwebane were introduced as members last month. Other prominent figures, including former EFF MPs Floyd Shivambu and Advocate Dali Mpofu, have also joined the party, signaling its growing influence.
The media briefing will provide insights into the MK Party's upcoming initiatives and its strategy to strengthen its position in South Africa’s political landscape.
