Eskom has successfully upgraded more than 5 million prepaid electricity meters across South Africa, with the Sunday deadline fast approaching.

The final week saw long queues of customers at service points nationwide, prompting Eskom to deploy additional staff to manage the surge and ensure timely assistance.

Despite the progress, the power utility has urged customers who have yet to upgrade their meters to act quickly. Eskom officials have reiterated that the deadline will not be extended, warning that those who miss it may face a hefty cost of up to R12,000 to replace their meters.

“We encourage everyone to complete the upgrade process as soon as possible to avoid disruption and additional costs,” an Eskom representative said.

The upgrade initiative forms part of Eskom’s broader efforts to modernize its systems and improve service delivery.
