Residents of Mqhekezweni village in the OR Tambo District are reeling from the recent murder of a traditional leader, Chieftainess Nogcinile Mtirara, and the reported rape of six Grade 12 learners.
Chieftainess Mtirara was tragically shot at the Mqhekezweni great place overnight, leaving the community in disbelief. This village holds historical significance, as the late President Nelson Mandela spent his teenage years with the Mtirara family.
In a separate incident, police are currently searching for two suspects connected to the rape of the six learners, who were staying in a rented house in the village. It remains unclear whether the rapes are related to the murder of the chieftainess.
