Parliament has paid tribute to former Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, who passed away at 65 in a Johannesburg hospital after a brief illness. The National Legislature acknowledged Mboweni’s significant contributions to South Africa’s lawmaking processes post-apartheid, particularly as the first Minister of Labour under President Nelson Mandela. Parliament’s spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, highlighted Mboweni's role in protecting workers' rights and dignity during a critical transition period and his efforts in dismantling apartheid-era legislation.

Parliament's presiding officers expressed their condolences, describing Mboweni as a "distinguished and versatile servant" dedicated to public service, justice, and equality. Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, a close friend, expressed sorrow over Mboweni's passing and fondly remembered him as the "Duke of Makgobaskloof." He noted Mboweni's recent participation in a lecture at the University of Limpopo, emphasizing the loss of a leader who left a lasting legacy in the struggle for freedom and the consolidation of South Africa's democracy.
