Parts of KwaZulu-Natal are experiencing scorching temperatures as a heatwave affects the southern and north-western regions. The South African Weather Service has warned that the Uthukela, Harry Gwala, Umzinyathi, and Amajuba districts are expected to be the hardest hit.
In Zululand, temperatures have already soared above 30 degrees Celsius in areas such as Pongola, eDumbe, and Abaqulusi.
Garrith Jamieson from ALS Paramedics has urged residents to stay hydrated and keep cool during this extreme weather. He emphasized the need for awareness regarding the effects of a heatwave on the body.
Jamieson outlined the signs of heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke and dehydration. "People may feel very weak and stop sweating after a period of excessive sweating. They could also experience moderate to severe headaches, nausea, and vomiting," he warned.
