Westville police are currently investigating a case of culpable homicide following the tragic death of Madhu Bunwarie, a 61-year-old woman from Pietermaritzburg. Bunwarie was killed on Sunday when a car battery smashed through her windshield while she was traveling on the N3.
She was returning home with her husband and two other relatives after attending a funeral for her uncle's brother in Phoenix when the incident occurred. According to her uncle, Roy Sukdhev, the battery was thrown from a bridge.
"This was absolutely tragic," Sukdhev said, recounting the events. "They rushed her to the hospital, but she had died instantly. It was absolutely devastating. This type of horrific incident seems to be a norm in this country. I can’t imagine whether it will ever be resolved. Something has to be done."
Fortunately, Bunwarie's husband and the other two occupants in the vehicle were not injured in the incident. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is ongoing.
