A 19-year-old accused of assaulting his 82-year-old grandmother at her home in Kraaifontein, Cape Town, is set to appear in court again today. The teenager, Luvo Gqaza, was arrested in July after a video of the disturbing incident went viral on social media.
The footage shows the elderly woman being violently attacked and falling to the floor while pleading for death rather than enduring continued abuse. The video sparked widespread outrage, leading to Gqaza's arrest.
During a previous court hearing, Gqaza was provisionally released on warning, under specific conditions. He now faces charges of assault and contravening the Older Persons Act, which protects the rights and dignity of elderly individuals in South Africa.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to the shocking nature of the video and the vulnerability of the victim.
