As thousands of rugby enthusiasts cheered on the Springboks in their thrilling clash against the All Blacks at DHL Stadium in Green Point, Cape Town, on Saturday, police were busy cracking down on vendors selling counterfeit rugby merchandise outside the venue.
Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi reported that the operation, conducted in collaboration with the City of Cape Town's law enforcement and brand protection officers, led to the seizure of counterfeit goods valued at R200,000. The operation began with compliance inspections at stalls around the stadium.
"During the operation, police and brand protectors confiscated various counterfeit items and imitations of well-known sports brands. Fines were issued for illegal informal trading without a valid permit," Swartbooi said. Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile praised the operation, describing the vendors' actions as economic sabotage.
“These measures should serve as a deterrent and a stern warning to those involved in trading counterfeit goods,” Patekile added.
Meanwhile, the Springboks secured a narrow 18-12 victory over the All Blacks in a gripping Rugby Championship Test, claiming the Freedom Cup for the first time since 2009. Springboks captain Siya Kolisi scored the opening try in the second half, leading his team to their fourth consecutive win over the All Blacks, a feat not achieved since 1949.
