KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) residents are bracing for a sharp drop in temperatures, which meteorologists attribute to a high-pressure system known as a ridging high. Thandiwe Gumede, a South African Weather Service forecaster, explained that this system follows a recent cold front, bringing cold, moisture-laden air from the Southern Ocean to the south-eastern parts of the country, including KZN.
“This is a ridging high that is pushing behind the cold front, carrying cold moisture into KZN,” said Gumede.
A level 2 warning for disruptive snowfall has been issued for the extreme southwestern regions of KZN, potentially affecting rural areas like Kokstad, Underberg, and Giant's Castle along the Lesotho border. Gumede cautioned that hazardous driving conditions due to slippery roads could lead to the temporary closure of mountain passes. Livestock and crops in these areas are also at risk due to the extreme weather.
The southwestern and extreme north-western parts of the province are expected to experience particularly cold conditions, while coastal areas have been forecasted an 80% chance of rainfall, with a 60% chance for areas adjacent to the coast.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and to monitor updates on weather conditions.
