Mandisa Maya Appointed as South Africa's First Female Chief Justice

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mandisa Maya as the new Chief Justice of South Africa, marking a historic first for the country's judiciary. Maya, currently serving as Deputy Chief Justice, will officially assume her new role on September 1st, succeeding Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, who will retire at the end of his term next month.

Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson for the President, announced the appointment, noting that it followed extensive consultations with the Judicial Service Commission and leaders of political parties represented in the National Assembly.

"President Ramaphosa appreciates the confidence expressed by the Judicial Service Commission and political leaders in the suitability of the incoming Chief Justice. This confidence will inspire and support her in her new role," said Magwenya.

Maya's appointment is seen as a significant milestone in South Africa's legal history, symbolizing progress and inclusivity within the country's judiciary.
