Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s busiest hub, suspended flights on Thursday morning after climate activists blocked runways by gluing themselves to the tarmac.

Travelers were advised to check with their airlines before heading to the airport and to allow for extra travel time.

The activist group Last Generation (Letzte Generation) claimed responsibility for the disruption, stating that six protesters had breached a fence and positioned themselves around the airport runways with signs reading “Oil kills.” Photos from the group showed activists in orange safety vests with their hands glued to the runway.

A federal police spokesperson confirmed the presence of several activists on the airport grounds. The group, which began its protest campaign on July 24, has announced plans for similar actions in various European and North American countries.

On Thursday, Last Generation reiterated its call for the German government to support a global agreement to phase out oil, gas, and coal by 2030.

The protest follows a similar disruption at Cologne-Bonn Airport, Germany’s sixth-largest, on Wednesday, where flights were suspended for several hours after activists glued themselves to a runway. Other planned disruptions at European airports have been thwarted by authorities.

Last Generation activist Ronja Kuenkler indicated that Wednesday’s protest was just the beginning but declined to comment on whether the upcoming Paris Olympics, starting Friday, would be targeted.
