Mxolisi Kaunda is set to step down from his role as the mayor of eThekwini. The African National Congress in KZN has announced his recall as a councillor, intending to redeploy him to the National Council of Provinces.

Kaunda assumed the position of mayor following the removal of Zandile Gumede in 2019 amid allegations of fraud and corruption.

The ANC stated that Kaunda's redeployment marks the beginning of a new chapter after the recent general elections. The party emphasized its commitment to addressing pressing issues and collaborating with all residents of eThekwini, regardless of political affiliation. The announcement of the new mayor will follow consultations within the party's structures.

Kaunda's departure coincides with ongoing coalition negotiations in KZN, prompted by the ANC's failure to secure an outright majority in the recent elections. The MK party led by Jacob Zuma claimed victory in the province with 45% of the vote.

The provincial legislature convenes its first session on Friday to inaugurate the incoming administration.
