Investigators have been gathering evidence from the site of a fatal fire at the Wayside informal settlement in Maritzburg. The extensive blaze erupted in one of the shacks and quickly engulfed three homes on Regina Road three days ago.
According to local ward councillor Renisha Singh, one person has died.
"Unfortunately, we are uncertain about the cause of the fire. Sadly, these families have lost all their possessions. A disabled woman perished in the fire. The community attempted to rescue her, but they were unable to extinguish the flames to reach her."
An inquiry is ongoing into the origin of the fire.
Singh mentioned they've received some aid but require more.
"We are still seeking assistance to provide tents or alternative shelters for these families. We are also working on obtaining clothing and materials to rebuild their homes."
