The African National Congress (ANC) has proposed a government of national unity with the aim of addressing the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment, and inequality.
This decision comes after the ANC lost its majority for the first time since the end of apartheid 30 years ago in recent elections. President Cyril Ramaphosa, speaking from Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, outlined the outcomes of a special ANC National Executive Committee meeting on coalition talks. He emphasized that the primary objective of the proposed government of national unity is to address pressing issues such as job creation, inclusive economic growth, the high cost of living, service delivery, crime, and corruption. Ramaphosa stressed the importance of all parties committing to shared values, including respect for the constitution, social justice, human dignity, non-racialism, non-sexism, stability, accountability, transparency, and good governance.
He also highlighted the necessity for written, public, and transparent agreements between participating parties, including measures for accountability.
