The South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA) states that its call for a grant for unemployed single men stems from the fact that many single male caregivers are unable to access the child support grant. According to the party, if it were in government after the elections, it would establish a grant specifically aimed at supporting unemployed single men.

SARA President Colleen Makhubele explains, “For us right now, it's about ensuring the well-being of the children we have encountered and spoken to. Even if we reach just two kids out there who are left desolate because their single father is unaware of the support available, it would make a difference. Economic circumstances often prevent single fathers from accessing the child support grant, and while the policy was later amended to include men, initially it was designed to assist women.”
