The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Northern Cape has indicated that the partner of the late Judge Yvonne Mokgoro may face culpable homicide charges following her death.

The partner was allegedly driving during a car crash that resulted in Mokgoro sustaining several injuries last year. Mokgoro was hospitalized after the crash in Warrenton near Kimberley, and the partner was initially charged with reckless and negligent driving. Unfortunately, Mokgoro passed away last week. Provincial NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane stated that David Mmelesi is currently out on warning and facing one count of reckless and negligent driving. There is a possibility of amending his charges to culpable homicide in light of the judge's death.

Mmelesi is scheduled to appear in court on May 30 in the Barkley West Magistrate’s Court. He appeared on a J175 and is currently on warning.
