Two learners from David Makhubo High School in Kaalfontein tragically passed away.
A Grade 12 learner collapsed and died during a memorial service for a Grade 10 boy learner who had passed away earlier. Despite initial assumptions of fainting, the Grade 12 learner did not survive. The news was disclosed the following day, causing some learners to experience fainting spells and chaos ensued with community members entering the school premises. Police are investigating the circumstances of the Grade 12 learner's death. Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, expressed condolences and stated that support services are being provided to the affected families and school community.
Additionally, four learners from Eqinisweni Secondary School reportedly died by suicide, with toxic substance consumption suspected as the cause.
