Police in Ekurhuleni have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his mother and sister at their family home in Daveyton.

Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), stated that the man was arrested on Wednesday morning. According to Thepa, the incident occurred on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, when the 38-year-old female complainant heard her mother arguing with her brother about his friends visiting their house.

The brother allegedly became physical with their mother, pushing her to the floor. When the sister intervened, he also assaulted her by forcefully pushing and slapping her multiple times. The sister stated that she had never seen her brother so angry before and no longer felt safe around him.

The family suspects that the man could be using drugs. The suspect was located and arrested by EMPD officers and detained at the Daveyton police station. He is expected to appear before the relevant magistrate’s court soon.

In a separate incident earlier this week, a 41-year-old man appeared before the Taung Magistrate’s Court for allegedly contravening a protection order issued under the Domestic Violence Act. Despite the existence of the protection order, the man reportedly assaulted his 73-year-old mother in her house, according to North West provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Adéle Myburgh.
