The City of Johannesburg is set to update the media on Wednesday afternoon regarding the ongoing progress following the fire underneath the M1 highway bridge in Johannesburg.

The fire, which broke out last Wednesday, is under early investigation with suspected cable theft and vandalism being cited as possible causes. This led to City Power's electricity infrastructure catching fire, resulting in power outages in parts of the city centre.

According to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, the replacement of burnt and stolen cables along the M1 highway bridge was expected to be completed by the end of the day yesterday.

It took two days to clear the rubble from the tunnel where the fire destroyed the electricity infrastructure.

City of Johannesburg Municipal Manager Floyd Brink is expected to visit the fire scene and provide further updates.
