Four individuals have tragically lost their lives, and at least five others sustained injuries after a knife-wielding assailant went on a rampage in the state of Illinois, USA.
According to authorities in Rockford, the assaults occurred subsequent to a home invasion on Wednesday afternoon, with one of the injured individuals reported to be in critical condition.
The victims encompass a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man.
A 22-year-old male suspect has been apprehended and is currently undergoing interrogation by law enforcement.
While the motive behind the attacks remains unclear, the home invasion transpired on Florence Street, with the assaults unfolding across various locations, as detailed by the police.
Winnebago Country Sheriff Gary Caruana elucidated that a young woman sustained stab wounds to her hands and face while fleeing from the perpetrator. She is presently hospitalized and undergoing intubation.
Furthermore, another individual, described by Sheriff Caruana as a "good Samaritan," incurred less severe stab wounds while attempting to intervene and aid the woman.
Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd conveyed that not all victims suffered stab wounds, and notably, none sustained gunshot injuries. She affirmed that law enforcement does not suspect any additional perpetrators at large.
Expressing her condolences, Chief Redd stated, "Words can't even express my thoughts right now... My heart goes out to the families right now who are suffering a loss."
A Rockford resident, Ruth Gallagher, recounted her long-time postman among the deceased, corroborated by the US Postal Service, which confirmed the death of a postal worker.
In response to the tragedy, Rockford city mayor Tom McNamara conveyed his condolences, acknowledging the profound impact on the community. He emphasized Rockford's resilience and pledged support for those affected, announcing the provision of free counseling services at Flinn Middle School.
