5 dead as coach overturns on German motorway near Leipzig

A motorway crash near Leipzig in eastern Germany has claimed the lives of at least five individuals and left several others injured. The incident involved a FlixBus coach, which reportedly veered off the busy A9 autobahn before overturning.

The FlixBus service, carrying two drivers and 53 passengers, had departed from Berlin and was en route to Nuremberg, heading towards Zurich. The company expressed condolences and stated that the accident occurred around 10:00 local time (09:00 GMT), approximately two hours into the journey, near Leipzig/Halle airport.

Authorities in Saxony extended sympathies to the victims and their families, as rescue operations swiftly mobilized with helicopters and numerous ambulances rushing to the scene. Local hospitals were alerted to prepare for a significant emergency response.

While the exact circumstances of the crash remain unclear, FlixBus emphasized that their thoughts are with all those affected. Notably, this incident marks another unfortunate event on the A9 motorway near Leipzig, where coach accidents have occurred in the past, including a fatal incident in December and another in 2019.
