Celebrating Dhanteras: The Auspicious Beginning of Diwali Festivities 🪔💰

Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the first day of the five-day Diwali festival and is considered one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. The word Dhanteras is derived from two Sanskrit words — Dhan, meaning wealth, and Teras, referring to the thirteenth day of the lunar fortnight of the month of Kartik. On this sacred day, devotees pray for prosperity, good health, and happiness. 🌟

According to legend, Dhanteras is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) carrying a pot of amrita, the nectar of immortality. Hence, Dhanteras is also celebrated as National Ayurveda Day, symbolizing health and well-being. 🪄

Traditionally, Dhanteras is associated with wealth and prosperity. It is believed that buying precious metals like gold, silver, or brass utensils on this day brings good fortune and wards off negativity. Many people also purchase new household items or make important business investments, considering the day to be highly auspicious for new beginnings. 💎🏠

As the sun sets, homes and businesses are beautifully lit with diyas (lamps) and candles, welcoming Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and abundance. Families offer prayers and chant mantras seeking her blessings for prosperity and success. The evening air fills with devotion, warmth, and the promise of light overcoming darkness. ✨

Durban, South Africa – The DSK Group, a leading humanitarian organisation in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV), is proud to announce the Telethon of Hope, taking place on 18th and 19th November 2025 at the Imbizo Conference Centre, Sibaya Casino.

The Telethon of Hope is a powerful initiative to raise funds towards building a dedicated Place of Safety for abandoned, abused, and neglected children—a secure sanctuary where young lives can be protected, healed, and restored.

The Plight We Cannot Ignore

South Africa is in the grip of a devastating crisis. According to national reports, incidents of gender-based violence and child abuse remain at alarming levels:

Children are often the most vulnerable victims, many subjected to unspeakable acts of violence.

Heart-wrenching cases continue to surface. In one horrific instance, a 9-year-old girl was raped by 27 men, leaving her in need of vaginal reconstruction surgery.

Statistics reveal that most child rapes are committed by perpetrators known to the victims, making homes and communities unsafe for many children.

These realities are not just numbers—they represent broken childhoods, lifelong trauma, and lives in desperate need of protection and hope.

The Work of DSK Group

For years, the DSK Group has been at the forefront of rescuing women and children from abuse, providing them with immediate relief, counselling, and pathways to safety. Through tireless advocacy and intervention, DSK has worked to shine a light on the darkness of GBV, while extending compassion and care to those most in need.

But the battle is far from over. South Africa urgently requires safe havens for children, and this telethon is a decisive step toward building one.

How the Telethon Works

The Telethon of Hope calls on every South African to take action. Participants are invited to call at least 10 of their contacts and encourage them to pledge towards this life-saving project.

The more participants who join, the closer we come to making this vision a reality. Each pledge, no matter how small, will go directly towards establishing a safe, nurturing home for the most vulnerable among us.

A Nation’s Call to Action

The Telethon of Hope is not just an event—it is a movement of solidarity, compassion, and justice. It is an urgent plea to society: let us protect our children before it is too late.

Together, we can ensure that no child has to live in fear, no survivor has to feel alone, and no voice goes unheard.
