Pitra Paksha – Honouring Our Ancestors

Pitra Paksha, also known as Shraddh or Mahalaya Paksha, is a deeply spiritual period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to paying respects to one’s ancestors. Falling during the waning phase of the lunar month of Bhadrapada (around September–October), this fortnight is regarded as a sacred time when families perform rituals to honour and express gratitude to their forefathers.

The Significance of Pitra Paksha

In Hindu tradition, it is believed that the departed souls of ancestors reside in Pitru Loka, a realm between heaven and earth. According to scriptures, during Pitra Paksha, these souls visit the earth to bless their descendants. By offering food, prayers, and rituals (Shraddh), families ensure peace and liberation for the departed, while also seeking blessings for prosperity, health, and harmony.

The rituals reflect the values of duty (dharma) and gratitude, reminding us that our lives are interwoven with the legacy of those who came before us. It is a time not only for rituals but also for reflection—remembering the virtues, teachings, and sacrifices of our elders.

Rituals and Observances

1. Shraddh Ceremonies – Families prepare special offerings, usually consisting of rice, sesame seeds, barley, and water, which are offered with prayers.

2. Tarpan – Water mixed with black sesame seeds and other sacred items is offered to the ancestors.

3. Feeding the Needy and Cows – It is customary to feed Brahmins, the poor, birds, and animals as an act of service, believed to bring merit to both the living and the departed.

4. Fasting and Prayer – Many people observe fasts and spend time in prayer or meditation to purify the mind and soul.

Beyond the rituals, Pitra Paksha teaches timeless lessons of gratitude, humility, and remembrance. It reinforces the idea that life is a continuum, where the past, present, and future are deeply connected. By honouring those who have passed on, families strengthen their bonds and preserve traditions for generations to come.

Pitra Paksha is more than a religious observance—it is a heartfelt reminder of the unbreakable bond between generations. In remembering and honouring ancestors, devotees find not only blessings but also inspiration to live with integrity, compassion, and respect for life’s spiritual journey.
