Krishna Janmashtami – Celebrating the Birth of Lord Krishna
Krishna Janmashtami, also known simply as Janmashtami, is one of the most joyful and spiritually significant festivals in Hindu culture. It marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is revered as the preserver of the universe and the divine embodiment of love, compassion, and wisdom. The festival is usually celebrated in August or September, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.
The Significance of Janmashtami
Lord Krishna’s birth holds deep meaning in Hindu philosophy. According to sacred texts, he was born in Mathura more than 5,000 years ago during a time of turmoil, oppression, and injustice. His arrival symbolised the triumph of good over evil and the restoration of dharma (righteousness). Krishna’s teachings, particularly those in the Bhagavad Gita, continue to inspire millions around the world with lessons on duty, devotion, and the pursuit of truth.
How Janmashtami is Celebrated
The celebrations of Janmashtami vary across regions but are always filled with devotion, music, and festivity:

Fasting and Prayers: Devotees observe fasting until midnight, the believed hour of Krishna’s birth, and break it after offering prayers.

Midnight Celebrations: At midnight, temples and homes come alive with chants, bells, and hymns as idols of baby Krishna (Bal Gopal) are placed in decorated cradles to mark his divine birth.

Jhankis: Many temples and households recreate scenes from Krishna’s childhood, especially his playful moments in Vrindavan.
