Holi, one of India’s most vibrant and joyous festivals, is celebrated with immense enthusiasm across the country and by Indian communities worldwide. Known as the Festival of Colors, Holi signifies the arrival of spring, the triumph of good over evil, and a time of unity and festivity.
Why is Holi Celebrated?
Holi has deep cultural and mythological significance. One of the most popular legends behind the festival is the story of Prahlad and Holika. According to Hindu mythology, the demon king Hiranyakashipu wanted to be worshipped as a god, but his son Prahlad remained devoted to Lord Vishnu. Enraged, Hiranyakashipu ordered his sister Holika, who was immune to fire, to sit in flames with Prahlad. However, due to divine intervention, Holika was burned while Prahlad remained unharmed. This event symbolizes the victory of good over evil and is commemorated through Holika Dahan, a ritual where bonfires are lit on the eve of Holi.
How is Holi Celebrated?
Holi is celebrated with colorful powders (gulal), water balloons, music, dance, and delicious sweets like gujiya and thandai. Families and friends come together to play with colors, forget differences, and spread happiness. The festival also promotes love and harmony, as it erases social barriers and brings people together.
