The Gauteng Provincial Government has expressed concern over continued gun violence in the province following three separate shooting incidents in Ekurhuleni on Tuesday night, which claimed six lives.
In Katlehong, four people believed to be African National Congress (ANC) Youth League members were killed when a gunman allegedly opened fire on them as they returned from a memorial service for an ANC member.
Two victims were declared dead at the scene, while two others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Three other people were wounded and remain in hospital.
In a separate incident in Vosloorus Extension Two, one person was shot and killed in Manaka Street.
Meanwhile, in Birchacres, Kempton Park, a 51-year-old man was gunned down inside his vehicle as he arrived home.
Police suspect the Kempton Park shooting may be linked to taxi violence.
The provincial government has condemned the ongoing gun violence, warning of its devastating impact on families and communities across Gauteng.
Meanwhile, ANC Youth League representative Palesa Molefe has called on police to intensify efforts to tackle violent crime and curb the proliferation of illegal firearms.
Molefe said the organisation would continue engaging with the affected families and relevant structures, with further updates to be provided following consultations.
“The blood of our young people cannot continue to flow in our streets. Their lives matter, their futures matter, and their deaths must not be met with silence,” she said.
Molefe added that the organisation was demanding justice, accountability and decisive action to end the violence affecting communities across the province.
