The City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Services says it will remain on high alert following a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms issued for Gauteng.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warning includes excessive lightning, strong and gusty winds, large amounts of small hail and heavy rainfall that could result in localised flooding.
Ekurhuleni EMS spokesperson William Ntladi has urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution as the adverse weather conditions are expected to affect the province.
Ntladi says motorists should ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling, particularly checking tyre tread, vehicle lights, windscreen wipers and braking systems.
He has also warned pedestrians to take extra care when crossing roads and avoid attempting to cross flooded rivers and streams.
“Pedestrians should be alert when crossing roads, flooded rivers and streams; rather use designated bridges to avoid imminent drownings,” Ntladi says.
Emergency services will continue monitoring the weather conditions and responding to incidents as necessary.
