An informant has asked the Madlanga Commission for protection guarantees after his identity was disclosed during Monday’s public hearings.
The informant has given the Commission until 1pm on Tuesday to respond, saying the disclosure has raised concerns about his safety and that of others involved in intelligence operations.
Through his lawyer, he confirmed that he had shared sensitive information with the Political Killings Task Team, including information allegedly linking underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala to serious criminal activities.
His legal representatives wrote to the Commission after evidence presented on Monday identified him as an intermediary who allegedly passed sensitive information to taxi boss Bafana Sindane.
Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson SC read WhatsApp messages and other documents into the record during the proceedings.
The informant’s lawyers say the disclosure has exposed their client and other individuals involved in intelligence operations to potential risks.
They told the Commission that their client had become aware of threats directed at him or people associated with him following the evidence presented during the hearings.
The lawyers are now seeking assurances from the Commission regarding protection measures for their client and others who may be affected by the disclosure.
The developments come as the Commission continues to examine allegations involving organised crime, intelligence operations and alleged links between criminal figures and individuals within law enforcement.
