An elderly man has died after a house caught fire in Montford, Chatsworth, south of Durban, in the early hours of Friday morning.
The eThekwini Municipality’s Fire Services responded to the property after receiving reports of the blaze.
Fire Services Divisional Commander Sifiso Mtshali said crews managed to bring the fire under control approximately 20 minutes after arriving at the scene.
South African Police Service (SAPS) officials and emergency medical personnel also attended the incident.
According to Amawele Emergency Services, a woman who was inside the house managed to escape through a window.
She was taken to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation.
Emergency services said the elderly man was only discovered approximately an hour after the fire had been extinguished. He was declared dead at the scene.
SAPS officials recovered the body before it was handed over to a morgue vehicle.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and fire safety officials have been advised to investigate the incident.
