Mpumalanga police have opened a murder investigation following the deaths of two teenagers whose bodies were discovered at a lodge in Sabie earlier this week.
Police initially opened an inquest docket after the bodies of 17-year-old Cameron Waldeck-Cooks and 19-year-old Ethan Coetzee were found at the lodge on Monday.
However, provincial police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said the investigation was escalated after postmortem results raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“The postmortem results suggest that the 17-year-old female may have been strangled, while the 19-year-old male may have taken his own life,” Masondo said.
He said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to establish exactly what happened.
“The investigation is still continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” Masondo added.
Police have not disclosed further details about the investigation as detectives continue to piece together the events leading up to the teenagers’ deaths.
